Gamvar Picture Varnish by Gamblin is a low molecular weight synthetic-resin gloss varnish developed by conservation scientists at the National Gallery. Gamvar Picture Varnish has a high refractive index similar to that of natural resins such a Dammar. This high light refraction bring out the best in the painting, making it "pop". The colors will appear more saturated. Unlike varnishes made from natural resins like damar and mastic, Gamvar does not yellow with age or become more difficult to remove. It contains a UV stabilizer that can help keep less lightfast pigments from fading. The Thicker it is applied, the more UV protection it will provide. The 5.4 fluid ounce package is a kit containing solvent and resin chunks and must be prepared before use. It covers up to 80 square feet of oil or acrylic paintings and can also be used for retouch.
