Gravity feed airbrushes feature a paint cup on top of the airbrush. Because the paints flows directly to the nozzle by gravity feed rather then by suction they offer smooth paint flow and allow for easy switching between colors. These are the airbrushes that are usually preferred for graphic arts, illustration, automotive graphics, cosmetics and fingernails.

Siphon feed airbrushes use a bottle attached to the bottom of the airbrush for their paint supply. This offers the advantage of easily switching from one bottle of paint to another. This type of airbrush is often favored by tee-shirt artists, cake decorators, taxidermists, and model builders. They generally have a higher paint output and are not quite as well suited to doing extremely fine detail.
